Tacoma Singer Vicci Martinez Aquires a Spot on “The Voice”

Tacoma singer-songwriter and “Star Search” veteran Vicci Martinez made it on to another reality TV show Tuesday: NBC’s “The Voice.”

Contestants go through a “blind audition” at which celebrity coaches (Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine) listen with their backs to the singers so they are not influenced by the singer’s appearance.

Any celebrity who wants a contestant on the show must commit to coach the singer. The goal is a record contract and a $100,000 prize.

Martinez, 26, is now on “Team Cee Lo.”

The acoustic blues and folk rock entertainer opted out of an appearance on the inaugural season of “American Idol,” wary of the hit show’s contractual restrictions.

She eventually made it to reality TV in 2003 with a pair of appearances on “Star Search.”

In a blog for “The Voice,” Martinez wrote that she was nervous but that the experience had been good so far. “They don’t want to change me. … Even record labels that have been interested in me have wanted to change something about me … not this show.”

She performs frequently in local venues and has opened for or shared the stage with Sting, Annie Lennox, B.B. King, the Doobie Brothers, Etta James and Jonny Lang.
